THE NEIGHBORHOOD NOTEBOOK / 04

North Central.
Get your bearings.

Established streets. Central Avenue mornings.
A different side of Phoenix.

A place is more than its listings. Here’s a first look at the streets, the stops and the practical details worth knowing before you make a move.

What does this map cover?

For orientation, this guide shades an approximate corridor between 7th Avenue and 7th Street, from Camelback Road toward Northern Avenue. This is an editorial search area, not an official neighborhood or historic-district boundary.

Uptown, the North Central corridor, Sunnyslope and individual subdivisions overlap in everyday conversation. The city’s North Central Avenue Special Planning District is a separate, more specific designation. The Vig and Steele Indian School Park are shown as nearby stops outside the shaded focus.

02 / AROUND THE CORNER

A few places
to start.

Coffee, dinner, a patio or a little time outside. A short editorial shortlist, including nearby stops, rather than a ranking. Check each venue for current hours and menus.

03 / THE HOMES

Character.
And context.

Original homes, established lots and infill construction sit within a broader mix of subdivisions. Look closely at renovation history, lot configuration and the particular street.

This source’s neighborhood data stops at March 2026, so these are older figures, not current October pricing. Redfin’s North Central Corridor geography differs from this guide’s editorial corridor. A median is the middle sale, not an average or a home valuation; ask for recent, address-specific comparables.

04 / DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Schools, by address.

Madison Elementary and Phoenix Union are useful starting points, with other districts relevant as you move beyond this guide’s corridor. Confirm the exact property address rather than inferring attendance from “North Central.”

MADISON ELEMENTARY / PHOENIX UNION

Check the actual address.

Use the official resources for each school level. Confirm attendance and enrollment with the district.

Examples from Madison’s school directory, not a guaranteed elementary-to-middle-to-high-school pathway.

05 / LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER

Beyond the brochure.

A few practical questions to take with you when you explore North Central.

01.

Treat the street as part of the home.

Visit at different times and notice through traffic, shade, school-day patterns and the routes to your everyday stops.

02.

Ask what changed, and when.

For an older home, compare the current layout with the renovation history. Ask about permits, drainage, roof condition and major systems.

03.

Understand the outdoor upkeep.

A substantial yard can be a pleasure and a commitment. Ask how the landscaping is watered, what equipment is included and what maintenance has involved.

ONE MORE THING FOR THE NOTEBOOK

The path along Central.

Murphy Bridle Path follows the east side of Central Avenue from Bethany Home Road north toward the Arizona Canal. It is a useful way to experience the corridor on foot; pay attention at driveway and street crossings.
